AJRI have been told that Knaresborough Castle is the only castle in England to have a working (?) sally-port. I know that there is one in the Garrison on the Isles of Scilly, leading from Hugh Town into the outer defences of Star Castle (bumped my head to prove it), but does anyone know of any other examples ?
PeterHm!
Visited Knaresborough last year for a few days. One item was to see said sally-port (out of season, closed). Got me thinking again. See what we all come up with ?
Erik SchmidtForgive my ignorance, but what exactly is a sally port. Is it a secret escape route or can it also be defined as a passage way to other parts of the defences? Must it be in the form of a tunnel?
Many castles have a "back door", but not usually in the form of a tunnel.
One of the castles in Bellinzona, Switzeralnd, has a tunnel inside the wall across the valley to move troops safely from one side of the valley to the other.

Erik SchmidtJust came across a refernce to a secret passage way at the castle of Ucero in Soria region of Spain.
http://www.castillayleon.com/castillos/icasti2.html

Quote from the web page;

"Built at XIV century, in one of the most exciting landscapes of the province of Soria: over the town of Ucero, the river of the same name and the Canyon of the Lobos River (Natural Park). A secret passage connects the castle and the river."

Erik SchmidtAnd here's another.

There's a reference to an escape passage which had been passable within living memory.

castleukHi AJR
Reigate Castle has a "working" sally-port if you mean one that is underground cut into the bed rock see www.castleuk.net south 187 but most castles have them which is a doorway in the curtain at ditch level to sally out of (postern doorway) sandal castle north 111
Chris
AJRThanks Chris. It is interesting to know that these exist elsewhere in Britain.
